A distinctive bulbous perennial growing to around 20cm tall, with broad, arching grey-green foliage that provides an attractive backdrop to its elegant spring flowers.
The white blooms feature large, rounded and gently cupped outer petals, surrounding shorter inner petals decorated with a striking green blotch. This unusual marking is often described as resembling a heart with a whale’s tail beneath it, giving the flowers plenty of character and making them instantly recognisable.
